friends

Making friends as an adult is weird. There’s no way around it. When you’re a kid, you just run up to someone on the playground, ask if they want to play, and boom—instant friendship. But as an adult? It’s a little more complicated. Life gets busy, people already seem to have their own circles, and let’s be real—putting yourself out there can feel painfully awkward.

But here’s the thing: it doesn’t have to be. Making new friends as an adult is totally possible, and it doesn’t have to feel like a middle school flashback where you’re trying to figure out where to sit at lunch. The key is to ditch the pressure, keep things natural, and remember that a lot of people are in the same boat.

It’s Not as Awkward as You Think

One of the biggest things that holds people back from making friends is the idea that everyone already has their social circle locked in. But that’s not really true. People move, change jobs, go through life transitions, and lose touch with old friends all the time. A lot of people want new friendships, but they just don’t know how to go about it without feeling weird.

The reality? It’s only awkward if you make it awkward. Most people are happy to chat and get to know someone new, especially if it happens in a natural way. Friendships don’t happen overnight—they build over time through small interactions.

Just Do Stuff You Enjoy and Be Open to Connection

You don’t need to go on some grand “friend hunt” to meet new people. The best friendships come from shared experiences, so the easiest way to make new connections is to just do things you already enjoy. Whether that’s going to a workout class, joining a book club, or even just becoming a regular at your favorite coffee shop, friendships tend to form when you’re consistently in the same space as people who have similar interests.

It’s not about walking into a room and thinking, Okay, who here will be my new best friend? It’s just about being open to conversation when opportunities pop up. The more you put yourself in situations where casual interactions can happen, the easier it gets.

Don’t Overthink Conversations

Starting conversations with new people can feel a little uncomfortable, but the truth is, you don’t have to be a master conversationalist. Most people just like to be around someone who’s friendly, approachable, and easy to talk to. You don’t need to be overly witty or have some deep, profound topic ready to go. Just be normal.

Instead of stressing about what to say, just keep it light and natural. If you’re in a casual setting, something simple like “I love that jacket—where’d you get it?” or “Have you been coming here long?” can easily spark a conversation. And if the vibe is right, the chat will flow. If not, no big deal. Not every conversation has to turn into a full-blown friendship.

Follow Up Without Being Weird About It

A lot of potential friendships fizzle out simply because no one follows up. If you meet someone you vibe with, don’t overthink it—just make an effort to keep in touch. Shoot them a quick message, invite them to something casual, or just keep showing up to the same places where you naturally cross paths. Friendships don’t develop from one good conversation—they grow through consistency.

And don’t take it personally if someone isn’t as eager to connect as you are. Some people just have a lot going on, and that’s okay. The right friendships won’t feel forced.

Friendships Take Time—Let Them Happen Naturally

The best friendships don’t come from trying too hard. They happen when you’re just being yourself, showing up consistently, and staying open to new connections. You don’t have to have it all figured out or go out of your way to “find” friends. Just do things you enjoy, be open to the people around you, and let things unfold in their own time.

So yeah, making friends as an adult is different than it was when you were a kid—but it’s not impossible. Drop the pressure, lean into opportunities, and let friendships develop in a way that feels natural. You’ve got this.

Have you ever found yourself feeling mentally and emotionally exhausted after spending time with certain people? Whether it’s a friend, family member, coworker, or even an acquaintance, some individuals can have a draining effect on your energy. They seem to demand more of your time, attention, and emotions than they give back, leaving you feeling depleted and overwhelmed. But the good news is that there are strategies you can use to protect your energy and navigate relationships with these types of people.

Recognize the Signs of Energy Drainers

The first step in dealing with energy-draining individuals is recognizing the signs. Energy drainers often leave you feeling:

  • Tired and emotionally exhausted: After interacting with them, you feel drained, even if you haven’t physically exerted yourself.
  • Stressed or anxious: They may create a sense of unease or overwhelm, making you feel on edge.
  • Negative or pessimistic: They tend to focus on problems rather than solutions, and their constant negativity can affect your mood and mindset.
  • Overburdened: You may find yourself constantly giving without receiving anything in return, either emotionally, mentally, or even physically.

If you notice these feelings after spending time with certain people, they might be draining your energy.

Set Boundaries and Stick to Them

One of the most effective ways to deal with energy-draining people is by setting boundaries. Boundaries are essential for protecting your mental and emotional health. When dealing with someone who drains your energy, it’s crucial to know when to say “no” and when to step back. Here’s how to set effective boundaries:

  • Be clear and assertive: Don’t be afraid to communicate your needs directly. Let the person know when their behavior is too much for you to handle. For example, “I need some alone time right now, and I can’t talk for much longer.”
  • Set limits on your availability: Whether it’s limiting the time you spend with them or the emotional energy you’re willing to give, set boundaries that work for you. This might include only answering emails or phone calls during certain hours or taking breaks between interactions.
  • Don’t feel guilty: Setting boundaries is a healthy way to protect yourself. You deserve to take care of your mental well-being, and it’s okay to prioritize your own needs.

Limit Your Exposure

Another strategy for dealing with people who drain your energy is by limiting your exposure to them. You don’t have to cut ties entirely (unless the relationship is toxic or abusive), but it’s important to be mindful of how much time and energy you invest in these individuals.

  • Be selective with your interactions: If possible, reduce the frequency of your interactions. Spend time with these people only when necessary and when you have the mental energy to do so.
  • Choose your environment wisely: If someone’s behavior is consistently draining, try to avoid environments where you’re likely to encounter them. This could mean not attending certain social events or taking a different route to work.
  • Surround yourself with positive influences: Fill your life with people who uplift and inspire you. Spending time with positive, supportive individuals will help you recharge and restore your energy.

Practice Self-Care

Taking care of yourself is an essential part of managing energy-draining relationships. If you feel like you’re constantly giving without replenishing yourself, you’re more likely to feel drained and overwhelmed. Prioritize self-care activities that help you recharge and restore your energy, such as:

  • Exercise: Physical activity is a great way to boost your energy and relieve stress. It helps you feel more grounded and balanced, making it easier to handle challenging interactions.
  • Meditation or mindfulness: Practices like meditation can help you clear your mind and reduce anxiety. Regular mindfulness exercises can help you stay centered and emotionally resilient, even in difficult situations.
  • Hobbies and passions: Engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. Whether it’s reading, crafting, or spending time outdoors, find activities that nourish your soul and bring positivity into your life.

Have Compassion, But Know When to Walk Away

It’s important to remember that people who drain your energy may not always be doing so intentionally. They might be struggling with their own challenges or have a negative mindset that affects their interactions. Practicing compassion and empathy can help you maintain your peace while also understanding their perspective. However, it’s equally important to know when to walk away.

If you’ve tried setting boundaries, limiting exposure, and practicing self-care, but you still find yourself feeling constantly drained, it may be time to reevaluate the relationship. It’s okay to walk away from toxic people who don’t respect your boundaries or make you feel worse about yourself.

Conclusion

Dealing with people who drain your energy is challenging, but it’s not impossible. By recognizing the signs, setting clear boundaries, limiting your exposure, practicing self-care, and being compassionate, you can protect your energy and maintain your well-being. Remember, you deserve relationships that uplift and energize you, so don’t be afraid to prioritize yourself and take steps to ensure you’re surrounded by positivity. With the right tools and mindset, you can manage energy-draining relationships and reclaim your mental and emotional health.

woman overthinking

Image by Enrique Meseguer from Pixabay

Do you ever find yourself replaying a conversation over and over? Or lying awake at night analyzing every little detail of the day? Overthinking is something we all do at times. But when it becomes a habit, it can drain our energy, increase stress, and keep us stuck in a loop of doubt.

So why do we overthink? And more importantly, how can we stop?

Why We Overthink

Overthinking often comes from a desire to be in control. We believe that if we analyze something enough, we’ll find the “perfect” solution. But in reality, overthinking usually leads to more stress, not clarity.

Here are some common reasons why we overthink:

  1. Fear of Making Mistakes – We worry about making the wrong choice, so we keep thinking instead of acting.
  2. Perfectionism – We want everything to be just right, so we analyze every possible outcome.
  3. Anxiety – Our brains try to prepare for the worst-case scenario, even when it’s unlikely.
  4. Regret – We replay past decisions, wondering if we could have done things differently.
  5. Lack of Confidence – When we don’t trust our instincts, we keep searching for reassurance.

The problem is, overthinking doesn’t actually help us. It just makes problems seem bigger than they are.

How to Stop Overthinking

Breaking the overthinking cycle isn’t easy, but it is possible. Here are some simple ways to calm your mind and move forward.

1. Recognize When You’re Overthinking

The first step is awareness. Pay attention to your thoughts. Are you replaying the same situation over and over? Are you stuck in a loop of “what ifs”? When you notice it happening, pause and take a deep breath.

2. Set a Time Limit

Give yourself a set amount of time to think about a problem—maybe five or ten minutes. Once that time is up, make a decision and move on. This helps keep your thoughts in check.

3. Take Action

Overthinking often keeps us from doing anything at all. Instead of waiting for the “perfect” choice, take a small step. Even a tiny action can help break the cycle.

4. Challenge Your Thoughts

Ask yourself: “Is this thought helpful?” or “Will this matter a year from now?” Many of the things we overthink aren’t as big as they seem.

5. Focus on What You Can Control

You can’t control everything, but you can control how you react. Instead of stressing over things outside your control, focus on what you can do.

6. Distract Yourself

Sometimes, the best way to stop overthinking is to do something else. Go for a walk, listen to music, or talk to a friend. Shifting your focus can help clear your mind.

7. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness helps bring your focus to the present moment. Try deep breathing, meditation, or simply paying attention to what’s happening right now.

8. Be Kind to Yourself

Nobody makes perfect decisions all the time. Remind yourself that it’s okay to make mistakes. The important thing is to keep moving forward.

Final Thoughts

Overthinking is exhausting, but it doesn’t have to control you. By recognizing it and taking small steps, you can break the cycle. The key is to trust yourself, take action, and focus on what really matters.

So the next time you catch yourself overthinking, take a deep breath and remind yourself: You’ve got this!

Conspiracy theories have fascinated people for centuries. From UFO cover-ups to secret societies, these ideas spark curiosity and debate. But why do we love them so much? The answer lies in human psychology.

Our Brain Craves Patterns

Our brains are wired to find patterns. This helps us make sense of the world. When events seem random or chaotic, we seek hidden connections. Conspiracy theories offer simple explanations for complex issues, making us feel more in control.

The Need for Certainty

Uncertainty makes us uncomfortable. Conspiracies provide clear-cut answers, even if they aren’t based on facts. They help us feel like we understand what’s really going on.

Trust Issues and Skepticism

Many people question authority. Governments, corporations, and media outlets have made mistakes or lied before. Because of this, some assume they are always hiding the truth. This skepticism fuels the belief in conspiracy theories.

A Sense of Belonging

Believing in conspiracies can create a sense of community. People who share the same views feel connected. This is especially true in online groups, where like-minded individuals reinforce each other’s beliefs.

The Thrill of the Unknown

Mystery excites us. Conspiracy theories make the world seem more interesting, almost like a real-life puzzle. The idea that “they don’t want you to know this” adds a layer of intrigue.

Social Media and Echo Chambers

Today, the internet spreads conspiracies faster than ever. Algorithms show us content we already agree with, making our beliefs stronger. This creates echo chambers, where opposing views rarely break through.

How to Think Critically

It’s important to question information before believing it. Look for credible sources, check the facts, and consider different perspectives. Thinking critically helps separate truth from fiction.

Final Thoughts

Conspiracy theories are fascinating, but they can also be misleading. Understanding why we believe them helps us make better decisions. Curiosity is good, but facts matter too.

women in solidarity

March is a month of celebration, recognition, and empowerment. It is recognized globally as International Women’s Month, a time dedicated to honoring the achievements, struggles, and contributions of women throughout history. This observance centers around International Women’s Day (March 8th) but extends throughout the month to continue the conversation on gender equality, women’s rights, and the need for ongoing progress.

Why March? The History Behind Women’s Month

The roots of International Women’s Month can be traced back to the early 1900s when women across the world began advocating for better working conditions, voting rights, and equal opportunities. International Women’s Day (IWD) was first celebrated in 1911 and gained momentum throughout the decades, with the United Nations officially recognizing it in 1977. Eventually, the observance expanded, and March became Women’s History Month in several countries, including the United States, to honor women’s contributions in all aspects of society.

The Importance of International Women’s Month

  1. Honoring Women’s Achievements – From groundbreaking scientists like Marie Curie to trailblazing activists like Malala Yousafzai, women have shaped history in profound ways. This month is a time to recognize their impact in science, politics, business, the arts, and beyond.
  2. Raising Awareness – While progress has been made, challenges such as the gender pay gap, workplace discrimination, and access to education still persist. This month encourages conversations about these issues and ways to address them.
  3. Empowering Future Generations – By highlighting the successes and struggles of women, we inspire young girls and future leaders to dream big, break barriers, and redefine societal norms.
  4. Celebrating Women Everywhere – Whether it’s recognizing the achievements of historical figures or celebrating the incredible women in our personal lives, this month is about appreciation and gratitude.

Ways to Celebrate and Support Women

  • Educate Yourself & Others – Read books, watch documentaries, or attend events that highlight women’s contributions and struggles.
  • Support Women-Owned Businesses – Shop from businesses owned and operated by women to promote economic empowerment.
  • Amplify Women’s Voices – Share stories of inspiring women on social media, in conversations, or through workplace initiatives.
  • Advocate for Equality – Get involved in organizations that fight for women’s rights and gender equality.

A Global Movement for Change

International Women’s Month is more than just a time for reflection—it’s a movement toward a more equal and just society. Whether through education, activism, or daily appreciation, everyone has a role in ensuring that the achievements and rights of women are acknowledged and upheld.

Let’s use this month to celebrate, uplift, and empower women—today and every day.

basketball ref

March Madness is upon us! As a sports enthusiast, this is one of the most exhilarating times of the year. While football holds a special place in my heart, basketball closely follows. Anyone who knows me is aware of my unwavering support for the San Antonio Spurs. However, in March, my attention shifts to college basketball.

Being from Waco, Texas, I proudly cheer for Baylor’s men’s and women’s teams. Yet, the allure of the entire NCAA tournament captivates me. The excitement, unexpected upsets, and Cinderella stories make March Madness a spectacle that’s hard to ignore. And, admittedly, I might indulge in a bit of friendly wagering during this period.

If you’re new to March Madness, here’s a guide to help you dive into the frenzy this year.

What is March Madness?

March Madness refers to the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament, a single-elimination competition that determines the national champion. This year, the tournament features 68 teams from across the nation and runs from March 18 to April 7, 2025.

The single-elimination format means that each game is a do-or-die scenario, amplifying the intensity and stakes. Teams that advance move closer to the coveted championship, culminating in the Final Four and the title game.

Why is it Called “March Madness”?

The term “March Madness” encapsulates the wild and unpredictable nature of the tournament. Each year, lower-seeded underdog teams often topple established powerhouses, leading to thrilling upsets. Fans are drawn to the high stakes, buzzer-beaters, and the emotional highs and lows that define the tournament.

2025 March Madness Men’s Schedule

  • Selection Sunday (March 16): Teams are announced and seeded into the bracket.
  • First Four (March 18-19): Eight teams compete for the final four spots in the main bracket.
  • First Round (March 20-21): The main tournament action begins with 64 teams.
  • Second Round (March 22-23): Winners from the first round vie for a spot in the Sweet 16.
  • Sweet 16 (March 27-28): Sixteen teams battle for Elite Eight positions.
  • Elite Eight (March 29-30): Teams compete for a coveted spot in the Final Four.
  • Final Four (April 5 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas): The semifinal matchups determine the championship contenders.
  • NCAA Championship Game (April 7 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas): The two finalists compete for the national title.

This year’s Final Four and championship game hold special significance as they will be hosted at the Alamodome in San Antonio, the former home of my beloved San Antonio Spurs. This adds an extra layer of excitement for fans like me.

Why People Go Crazy Over March Madness

  1. Brackets & Betting: Filling out a tournament bracket is a tradition for many, regardless of their basketball knowledge. Predicting game outcomes adds a personal stake, whether for bragging rights or friendly wagers.
  2. Upsets & Cinderella Stories: Every tournament features underdog teams defying expectations, earning the “Cinderella” moniker as they advance against the odds.
  3. Nonstop Action: The tournament’s structure offers a continuous stream of high-stakes games, especially during the initial rounds, keeping fans glued to their screens.
  4. Rivalries & Passion: College basketball boasts passionate fan bases and historic rivalries, amplifying the tournament’s intensity and allure.

How to Get Involved

  • Fill Out a Bracket: Participate in bracket challenges, even if you’re unfamiliar with the teams. The unpredictability is part of the fun.
  • Watch the First Weekend: The opening rounds are packed with games and potential upsets, offering some of the most thrilling moments.
  • Pick a Team to Root For: If you don’t have a favorite, consider supporting Baylor’s teams or adopt an underdog for the tournament’s duration.
  • Join a Watch Party: Experience the games with friends, family, or fellow fans. The shared excitement enhances the overall enjoyment.

Get Ready for the Madness!

March Madness transcends basketball; it’s a cultural phenomenon. Whether you’re drawn by the competition, the stories of underdog triumphs, or the camaraderie of shared viewing experiences, it’s a time to immerse yourself in the excitement.

So, prepare your brackets, gather your snacks, and get ready to be part of the madness. With the Final Four and championship game set in San Antonio’s Alamodome, this year’s tournament promises to be unforgettable, especially for fans of the Spurs and college basketball alike.

Who knows? This might be the year you find yourself swept up in the exhilarating world of college basketball.

St. Patrick’s Day is a time for fun, luck, and all things green! While many people celebrate with parades and pints of beer, there are plenty of other creative ways to enjoy the holiday. Whether you’re celebrating at home, with family, or out in your community, here are ten unique ways to make the day extra special.

1. Host an Irish-Themed Movie Night

Skip the crowded bars and enjoy a cozy night in with some classic Irish films. Movies like The Secret of Kells, The Quiet Man, or P.S. I Love You offer a mix of history, folklore, and romance. Don’t forget to make some Irish popcorn—drizzle it with butter and sprinkle a little sea salt and cheddar for a delicious treat!

2. Cook a Traditional Irish Meal

Celebrate by making authentic Irish dishes at home. Try cooking corned beef and cabbage, Irish stew, or shepherd’s pie. If you have a sweet tooth, bake some Irish soda bread or whip up a batch of shamrock-shaped sugar cookies. Pair your meal with an Irish coffee or a warm cup of Barry’s Tea for a true taste of Ireland.

3. Go on a Green-Themed Scavenger Hunt

This is a great idea for kids and adults alike! Create a scavenger hunt with St. Patrick’s Day clues and hide small prizes like gold chocolate coins, green trinkets, or shamrock decorations. If you’re playing with adults, you can add challenges like trivia questions about Irish history or fun dares.

4. Learn an Irish Dance

Put on some Irish music and learn a traditional dance! Try step dancing, céilí dancing, or even just a fun jig. There are plenty of online tutorials to help you get started. If you really want to go all out, dress up in green and host a mini dance competition with friends or family.

5. Make Your Own Lucky Charms

No, not the cereal! Get crafty and make personalized lucky charms or friendship bracelets with green beads, clovers, or Celtic symbols. You can also paint rocks with Irish blessings or symbols of good luck, like horseshoes and rainbows. These make fun keepsakes or gifts for friends.

6. Take a Virtual Tour of Ireland

If you can’t travel to Ireland, bring Ireland to you! Many historic sites offer virtual tours, including the Cliffs of Moher, Blarney Castle, and the Guinness Storehouse. Explore the beautiful landscapes, listen to Irish storytelling, or even take an online Irish language lesson to fully immerse yourself in the culture.

7. Create a DIY Leprechaun Trap

This one is perfect for families with young kids. Have fun crafting a leprechaun trap using household items like shoeboxes, glitter, and rainbow-colored paper. The goal is to “catch” a leprechaun overnight—though, of course, they always manage to escape! Leave behind some gold coins or a tiny note to add to the magic.

8. Have a St. Patrick’s Day-Themed Cocktail Night

Gather some friends and mix up festive drinks! Try an Irish Mule with whiskey and ginger beer, a Shamrock Sour, or a green apple martini. For a non-alcoholic option, blend up a minty shamrock shake or make a refreshing cucumber-lime spritzer. Don’t forget to garnish your drinks with green sugar rims or shamrock-shaped stirrers!

9. Listen to Traditional Irish Music

Set the mood with some classic Irish tunes. Play traditional Celtic music featuring fiddles and bagpipes, or listen to bands like The Dubliners, The Chieftains, or Dropkick Murphys. If you play an instrument, try learning a simple Irish folk song and have a mini jam session.

10. Perform a Random Act of Kindness

St. Patrick’s Day is all about luck and good fortune, so why not spread some kindness? Pay for someone’s coffee, leave a kind note for a coworker, or donate to a charity. You can even leave “lucky” notes around your neighborhood with positive messages to brighten someone’s day.
