The warm clear blue waters of the Atlantic set Miami apart from other coastal destinations. Known as one of the country’s top vacation spots, Miami is famous for its beaches, nightlife, shopping and restaurants.

As I’ve probably mentioned before on Gigi’s Ramblings, Miami is also referred to as the cruise ship capital of the world. On any given day, a large number of party, sightseeing and Caribbean-bound cruise liners can be seen departing its busy port.

The upscale hotels, specialty boutiques, art festivals and numerous sports activities attract visitors from all walks of life. For those who are planning on visiting, I have compiled a list of 5 family-friendly beach destinations you can visit year-round.

Bal Harbour

Situated in the upper tip of Miami Beach, Bal Harbour is known for its charming character and gorgeous azul waters lined with powdery beaches and tropical gardens. Interestingly, Bal Harbour has more millionaires per capita than any other U.S. city, listed by Discover Homes Miami as an exclusive neighborhood, known for its wealthy residents, swanky oceanfront hotels, resorts and private homes.

With less than 3,000 permanent residents, Bal Harbour is a peaceful enclave located along the Atlantic shoreline. Shopping in the trendy Bal-Harbour Shops open-air complex, is popular among tourists and locals alike, featuring top designers like Louis Vuitton, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Versace, Chanel, Hermes and Burberry among many others.

Although beaches can only be accessed through the hotels or clubs, they are beautifully pristine and among the most protected coastal areas in the nation. Bal Harbour is the ideal place for those looking for peace and quiet along an uncrowded stretch of sand.

Haulover Beach

With fine, sugary white sand and surf that stretches for miles, Haulover Beach is a fantastic family destination. The beach is ideal for both swimming and surfing, drawing visitors from all over the US and Canada.

Haulover has found itself at the top of  many best beaches lists over the years. This is primarily due to its beautiful scenery and year-round phenomenal weather. It sits in a perfect spot right between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway.

I should mention for those parents traveling with little ones, the area is also home to South Florida’s most well-known nude beaches, a very popular gay nude beach and even a dog beach; not to worry, however, as each area is clearly marked for visitors.

Sunny Isles Beach

Centrally located between the Atlantic Ocean on the East and the Intracoastal Waterway on the West, Sunny Isles can be found just north of Miami Beach. Sunny Isles is home to several world-renowned restaurants, theaters and nightclubs, which dot the oceanside boulevard. The beach features some of Miami’s most spectacular ocean views, with white sand stretching for miles.

Well-kept public parks and plenty of safe places for children to play make Sunny Isles Beach one of the top family destinations in Miami. Easy access to shopping, spas, golf, tennis and water sports make this top spot that much more desirable for those seeking an adventurous getaway.

Once known as Motel Row in the 1950s, today Sunny Isles is a popular tourist destination with visitors coming to enjoy both its natural beauty and commercial appeal. And did I mention the beach has one of the most breathtaking sunrises in the world?

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Beach

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Beach is a quiet and serene alternative to Miami’s more notorious beaches. Located right on the tip of Key Biscayne, it is also home to the Cape Florida Light, a historic lighthouse and the oldest standing building in Miami-Dade County.

This beach certainly doesn’t lack in beauty or charm and there is an abundance of activities. Walking and bike trails wind through plush grounds of native vegetation. Avid fishermen and families wanting to cast a line can purchase bait and tackle on the seawall along Biscayne Bay.

Visitors can take advantage of the two onsite restaurants, the Lighthouse Café which faces the beach, and Boaters Grill, located on a secluded lagoon. Both restaurants serve authentic Cuban food, sandwiches and beverages. A relaxing beach day on beautiful Key Biscayne is a treasured Miami pastime.

South Pointe Park Pier

South Pointe Park Pier is a popular spot among families with children. With a more private and secluded beach area, a playground with a water park, a fishing pier and easy access to nearby restaurants and amenities, South Pointe is the perfect choice for relaxation and unwinding. With an ideal location at the southernmost tip of Miami Beach, it is also a great place to gaze at the cruise ships as they come and go while relaxing on the beach.

The Pier extends into the Atlantic Ocean and is popular among local fishermen, conveniently equipped with stations for cutting bait and washing fish. When it’s crab season, you’ll find plenty of folks carrying bags of seafood and claws from the nearby restaurants. The large park flourishes all year and offers walking paths, lush greenery and panoramic views of the ocean.

Families interested in staying in more of a secluded location, the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort offers a whole host of activities for you and your family. Families will also enjoy movies under the stars and making s’mores at the fire pit.

La Cantera not only offers breathtaking views of the pristine Hill Country overlooking 2 Championship golf courses; but it’s also a short trip to the endless number of attractions in San Antonio, like Sea World and Six Flags Fiesta Texas. If you are interested in experiencing authentic ranch life in style, the obvious choice would be the Hyatt Wild Oak Ranch Hotel where you can enjoy real Texas Barbecue, explore the native wildlife nature trails and stay in a 1-, 2- or 3-bedroom residential-style condominium. Children will enjoy Camp Armadillo, the property’s kids’ program that includes amusement park excursions and scavenger hunts, as well as activities like arts and crafts. The property also boasts the 800-foot Rattlesnake River Pool with water slide, three spa locations, and a fire-pit at the Wildflower Pavilion where you can take in a movie under the stars.

 Westin Riverwalk Hotel San Antonio

The Westin Riverwalk Hotel offers the ideal downtown getaway, facing the lower loop of the River Walk, offering great panoramic views of the lively area. It is also a few blocks from the Buckhorn Saloon, The Alamo, and a short drive from the Tower of Americas. The Westin Kid’s Club provides young guests with goody bags that contain make-your-own postcards, a big world map to find their location and other materials to help them explore the hotel and beyond. Westin Service Express is available if diapers, playpens, bottle warmers, booster seats or strollers are needed. Suites are available for those who are wanting a little more space and don’t forget to take a dip in the outdoor heated pool.

San Antonio will always be one of my favorite vacation spots. The city is so rich in history and culture, it is impossible not to become intrigued. Regardless of where you choose to stay, you will find plenty to keep your family entertained.

New York City is one of the most desired travel destinations among American families. For many, the bright lights, masses of people and the sheer size of the city are unimaginable. The whirlwind that is portrayed on TV and in movies make NYC all the more intriguing.

What’s Not to Love?

New Yorkers are a breed of their own, the world witnessed this after 9/11. Their strength, resilience and the way they stand in solidarity makes outsiders want to experience their culture.  From strong personalities to distinct accents; you gotta love ‘em!

The Big Apple has something for all ages. Finding things to keep your kids occupied while on vacation can sometimes be quite a task. Teens are probably the hardest age group to impress, but even the most jaded, hard-to-please child will find something they love about the city. There are so many iconic things to see, so many experiences to be had, it is impossible for visitors to become bored.

statue of liberty nyc

Where to Begin?

The first thing you must do upon your arrival is to get your bearings. The city is massive, being made up of five boroughs: Queens, Manhattan, Harlem, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Tourists tend to migrate towards Manhattan, although each has its own special attributes.

You will need to figure out how you plan on getting around. Walking will definitely be on this list. You can’t get the true New York experience without a little foot travel. Taking a cab is another must-do, it’s just part of the appeal. The subway is the fastest option when trying to get to one end of town to the other. Water taxis are available for your trip to Manhattan and other areas.

Make sure to familiarize yourself with your surroundings so you will always be able to find your way back. Most streets are set up on a logical grid system, with the Avenues running north to south. It’s relatively easy to figure out where you are, but GPS could definitely come in handy.

Where to Stay?

Lodging options are endless, but there are some that are specifically aimed towards families traveling with children. There are also some that are not family-friendly whatsoever. Doing your homework on hotels and their amenities can make all the difference in how your stay ends up.

Where to Eat?

No matter which part of the city you are in deliciousness can be found on any corner. There are so many eateries to choose from it’s hard to make suggestions. Whether you are craving street food vendors or a five-star restaurant, you will not be disappointed. New York is famous for few items that will have your mouth watering, these include hot dogs, Brooklyn-style pizza, cheesecake, Manhattan clam chowder, General Tso’s chicken, and the iconic bagel.

Take a Tour

Sometimes the best way to experience the city is through the eyes of a local. There are so many available tours, you may find yourself overwhelmed. Picking a tour will depend on your personal interests. Some recommended tours for families with children are:

  • Central Park Rickshaw Tours
  • Shark Boat
  • Horse and Carriage Rides
  • Venetian Gondola Tour
  • New York Splash Tours

Okay, so I saved the best for last. It is impossible to cover all the wonderful things there are to explore in this wonderful city, but I have compiled a list of some of the most popular family-friendly attractions you won’t want to miss.

Toddlers and work- whew!! Toddlers ARE work! Lucky for me, my most creative hours are after 1 am, but this is definitely not practical for everyone. The toddlers in my house are my grandbabies, so I only have them a set number of hours each day. For those mothers that have little ones around the clock finding time to breathe can be challenging enough, finding time to work can seem impossible. It is imperative to find a balance between giving your little ones the attention they need and being productive in your work.

Here are a few tips for all you work-from-home mommies:

1. Schedule, Schedule, Schedule.

Easier said than done, I know. There needs to be a clear, concise time that is set aside for you to devote to your business. Even if it is only an hour, make sure you clear that space and utilize your time wisely. You will feel like you have accomplished something, trust me.  You also need to get the kiddos on a schedule. Make sure you have breakfast at the same time, naps at the same time, activities at the same time and so on. I know some days this will be about as possible as winning the lottery, but for the most part, children adapt to schedules relatively well. Whenever you can sneak in a little work time take advantage of that!

2. Minimize distractions.

Easier said than done, I know. When you have your scheduled work time, make sure you are completely zoned in on the task at hand.  Turn off your phone, TV and any other devices that may take away your focus.

3. Have a designated workspace.

You want a place where you can go that is neat, organized, and efficient for your needs. You don’t want to waste whatever time you have managed to set aside looking for a lost file.

4. Delegate tasks.

If your business is booming and you have more work than you can handle, hiring a virtual assistant may be an option for you. There are several online platforms, like Upwork.com, which makes it easy to find a reputable freelancer.

5. Meal Prep.

Meal prepping has become very popular with busy moms. There are countless step-by-step instructions on the internet to walk you through this. It will shave off a significant amount of time you spend in the kitchen preparing meals each day. It also encourages healthy eating…a win-win situation!

6. Share chores.

Everyone knows running a household is more than a full-time job! If there is someone else who lives in the home with you (husband,  roommate, older child, etc.) get them to lend you a hand getting the clothes in the dryer or washing that stack of dirty dishes.

7. Get plenty of rest.

When there’s not enough time in the day many people, myself included, find themselves burning the midnight oil. This is not good for your health, your family or your business. Many nights I have found myself up well after 3 am just to be unproductive the entire next day due to moodiness, brain fog, and exhaustion. You have to fuel yourself with rest to be at your full potential.

8. Enjoy the time with your child.

This is the most important tip I can give you. I mean, after all, this is why we do it. Quality time with your baby makes all of the sacrifices worth it! When my kids were growing up I didn’t have the option to work at home. Take it from me, you miss so many things! The daycare center was essentially raising my children. I am so grateful now to be able to spend my days with the grandkids. And I know their parents are grateful to be able to have someone to nurture and love them, rather than sharing a teacher with 20 other children.  Make the time you have with them special, it goes way too fast!

When you are in New York City, it is a given, you must visit Central Park. Your trip is not complete without treating your family to the Central Park experience. Whether you plan on doing a self-guided tour or taking part in many of the tours that are offered throughout the park, this article will cover some of the must-see attractions that your kids will love.

The History of Central Park

Construction on Central Park began in 1857, becoming the first urban park in the United States. The design was the brainchild of superintendent Frederick Law Olmsted and architect Calvert Vaux.   It took more than 10 years to come to life, costing the city of New York millions of dollars. More than 1,500 residents lost their homes and land to make way for the expansive 840-acre construction.

During the early years, Central Park was most frequented by the wealthy, but over the years it evolved into a park of the people. The last century has brought more practical uses to the park. Today, it is the main outdoor recreation hub for New Yorkers.
